Swedish Medical Hospital
Swedish Medical Center-HealthONE, a Level I Trauma Center, serves as the region’s referral center for neurotrauma and is a recognized leader in the treatment of stroke. Swedish’s Centers of Excellence include: Adult and Pediatric Trauma Services, Neurosciences, Advanced Radiology Capabilities, Cancer Treatment Services, Cardiology Services and Women’s & Children’s Services. An acute care hospital with 368 licensed beds, Swedish is located in the south Denver metro area in Englewood, CO., where it has been a proud member of the community for more than 100 years.

Computer Operator
Englewood, CO (November 1991 - November 1995)

The Swedish Hospital Data Center is the “heart” of the hospital computing environment. The data center includes a “manned” 24X7X365 hour data processing facility, all network connectivity (Internet, interoffice, communications around the world, and the Internet), over 350 UNIX and Windows servers, all telecommunications, and other technologies that service Swedish Hospital's business applications. The operation is manned by computer operators that perform computer batch processing, monitoring of the computing infrastructures, execution of backup of data, and are the eyes and ears of the hospital's technology. They primarily assist in identifying after hours technical issues that were not identified by automated monitoring capabilities. The implications on any break in the 24 hour services would have a significant business impact in that jobs would not execute, business transactions would not be posted for each day’s business, and the backup of data would not occur. The Command Center Operations group is essential critical to the company.

I Performed complete audits of our Computer Operations duties to ensure consistent installations, standards, and security requirements were present.
Built on and provided a show cased Data Center environment. This included monitoring and managing the overall appearance of the data center.
Enhanced “shared services” for the data center to include monitoring of all computer server and networking systems
Continued implementation and enhancement of monitoring capabilities. Worked with other IT disciplines to see how Computer Operations could strengthen the monitoring and notification processes as we increased the breadth and depth of monitoring capabilities.
Integrated more closely with project teams to understand, early in the process, changes coming into the environment as well as ensuring our supportability requirements were well understood and addressed early
Cross-trained Computer Operator’s on all shifts. This provides for a greater range of support but also enhanced the overall “big picture” objective
Proactively worked with the Security Audit team to understand and refine the security requirements. Instituted those requirements to strive for zero incidents on new systems and zero reoccurring incidents on existing systems
